Measuring to replace aluminum or steel windows

measure-aluminum

1. Remove screen and open the moving panel to identify the portion of the frame (jamb) that will remain when glass panels are removed.

2. Verify that the jambs are the same on both sides of the aluminum or steel window.

3. Width measurement: Using a tape measure, measure the distance between the sides (jambs), see detail. Measure at several locations. Keep the smallest or narrowest dimension.

4. Height measurement: Measure from the top (head) to the bottom (sill), see detail. Measure at several locations. Keep the smallest or shortest dimension.

5. When ordering be sure to deduct 1/4" from the width dimension and deduct 1/4" from the height.

measure-width

1. To measure the width extend a tape inside the window frame from jamb to jamb as shown in "Horizontal section" and subtract 1/4".

2. To measure the height, extend a tape from the highest point of the sloped sill to the window head as shown in "Vertical section" and subtract 1/4". (Care must be taken not to measure to the stool or trim.)

3. When ordering always indicate the width first, then the height, this application typically calls for a Block Frame.

4. In most cases you must use either a Single Hung or a Double Hung window to meet egress for fire codes.
