Installing New Doors

Before beginning the installation of the patio door, please read all instructions thoroughly, and make sure you have the following items on hand: Patio Door, hardware pack and screen.

NOTE: Quiet Solution does not recommend removing the nailing fins for installation. Removing the fins along the head or jambs will void the warranty and any bowing or problems caused by improper installation will be the sole responsibility of the installer.

Begin by measuring the rough opening of the door to insure a proper fit. The opening should be no more than 3/4" greater in width and 1/2" greater in height than the actual unit. The sill plate must be level.

Remove the screen and operable sash from the frame. If the operable sash rollers do not clear the sill track, they can be adjusted from each end of the sash. The adjustment hole can be found behind the hole cover.

Note: Rollers are easier to adjust if there is no weight on them.

If the screen rollers do not clear the screen track, there is a screen roller adjustment screw located in each of the four corners of the screen.

To field-reverse the frame, remove the screen roller track and sash roller track from the sill and the bumper stop from the head. Turn the frame upside down and replace the screen track and roller track on the bottom of the frame. Make sure the weep slots are towards the outside on the roller track. Replace the bumper stop in the upper corner next to the fixed lite.

To field-reverse the sash, remove the sash rollers from the bottom of the sash and reinstall them in the roller cutouts on the top of the sash.

If the sash has a single-point locking system, remove the two outside screws in the mortise latch and reinstall the mortise latch in the opposite direction. The hook arm should face up.

Apply a generous bead of silicone caulking along the sill of the rough opening. Apply a continuous 3/16"- 1/4" bead of silicone caulk on the inside perimeter of the nailing fin, covering all of the pre-punched installation holes.

NOTE: Slaters felt must not be applied until the unit is installed.

Lift the assembled frame by the jambs and set it into the rough opening, so the operable sash will be on the inside of the house.

From the outside, place a 1-1/4" roofing nail in the top corner of the nailing fin. Use wood shims if necessary and ensure the unit is level. Once the unit is level, place a roofing nail in the opposing top corner of the nailing fin.

Make sure the unit is still plumb, level and square before securing the frame in the rough opening. Measure from corner to corner on the frame to ensure the frame is square (upper left to lower right and upper right to lower left). Add shims if necessary making sure to leave a 1/8" to 1/4" space between the frame and the rough opening.

Begin securing the frame in rough opening by placing a roofing nail through every other pre-punched hole on the nailing fin. Make adjustments in nail size for different sheathing thickness or applications.

NOTE: When the design pressure of the door exceeds 25, it is necessary to provide additional anchorage of the door in the opening. Use a 3/16" x 3/8" two-step drill bit and drill installation holes in the jambs. Drill the holes at 12" intervals, starting 12" from the top corner. Place #8 x 2-1/2" screws through the holes into the rough opening. Do not overtighten the screws as this could cause the jambs to bow. Seal the holes with installation hole covers.

Remove and replace all screws in the keeper with #8 x 2-1/2" installation screws (provided).

NOTE: If installing a Patio Door with transom, you will have to place installation screws through the pre-drilled installation holes in the jambs. These holes can be located by removing the filler strip along each jamb. Once the screws have been installed, replace the filler strip.

All Patio Doors come equipped with a handle set which includes an interior and exterior handle and key lock. Assembly instructions for these parts are enclosed in the packet with the handle set.

With the frame secured in the rough opening, operation of the operable sash can be fine tuned. Open and close the sash to check operation. Also, check to see if any of the perimeter seals are exposed. The operable sash rollers can be adjusted up or down at the outside corners of the operable sash.

The screen rollers may also need to be adjusted.

An optional foot bolt is available which includes a bolt assembly and locking plate. Assembly instructions for this are enclosed in the packet with the foot bolt set.

Finish off the interior of the door. Insert insulation between the door frame and the rough opening. Avoid bowing the frame by over packing the insulation. Trim around the interior of the head and jambs.

It is important to place a 1/2" x 3/4" stop along the full length of the sill. This can be effectively achieved with the flooring material when it is installed against the sill on the interior of the home. Small pieces of reticulated foam can be found in the lock handle set package. These can be cut and inserted in the exterior holes at the head of the window to discourage insects from entering.

NOTE: If finishing off the exterior with brick, stone, stucco, etc., make sure to leave a 1/4" gap around the door frame to allow for expansion of materials and mortar.
